Former Radio 1 colleague of Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo who appeared on Simon's 5 Live programme to talk about his book Pies And Prejudice in early 2007. He stayed on to talk about films during the film review section, during which he agreed with Simon about the Ker-CHING moment in Casino Royale; speculated on how much Leonardo diCaprio looks like a "young, sexy Norman Lamont"; urged the makers of Babel to make the film better by "getting a giant animatronic robot in there" and finally made the point that watching 21 Grams reminded him of listening to interviews with Thom Yorke.

Maconie has a regular gig on radio station 6 Music with Mark's former nemesis Mark Radcliffe.
